![]() ![]() In the end the crusader’s army dissolves and Dolf manages to return to the 20th century. He also makes enemies but manages to survive and even saves the children from a hostile priest. Dolf joins the crusade because he can’t return and quickly becomes a prominent figure thanks to his 20th century knowledge. Dolf, a fifteen year old boy living in the 20th century, travels to the thirteenth century with a time travelling machine and ends up in Germany, in the middle of the crusade, by accident. It’s set in 1212, when a children’s crusade* parted from Germany for the Holy Land. Kruistocht in spijkerbroek (”crusade in jeans”), published in 1972, is by far Beckman’s most popular work. She won several prizes for her works and remains one of the best known children’s writers in Belgium and the Netherlands.
